Youth baseball leagues are gearing up for their spring seasons. If you've never been involved in the behind-the-scenes activities of a Little League, you might be surprised at how much is involved before the first pitch is thrown, in order to get the kids on the field. Someone, (and these are all usually volunteers, by the way), needs to oversee registration. Uniforms need to be ordered and sized based on the number of players who register. Volunteer coaches must be coordinated, cajoled into giving up their time for the coming three months. Equipment has to be purchased, division managers assigned, umpires scheduled, field maintenance planned, trophies ordered, fundraising coordinated and rolled out. There is so much that goes into running a youth baseball league. Next time you see one of your league's board members, stop and tell them how much you appreciate what they do.

Did you think we were going to say, "It's the only thing?" Maybe if you're getting paid to play. But short of that, let's be realistic. One can almost put a timeline on the importance of winning based on the age of participants. T-ball? Not that important. And while every year it might become gradually more and more of a factor, we should always try to participate in sports for the enjoyment. But yeah, if you win, that is a little more fun.
You may be a soccer mom looking for gear for your child. Or a baseball dad who coaches Little League. You may coach a high school lacrosse team or be a college Athletic Director.
