Here at Upstart, we're not partial to any one team. But, seeing how this is the first time in the HISTORY of Wrigley Field that the Cubs have clinched a playoff series at home, and the fact that they've had so much frustration while maintaining a loyal and long-suffering fan base, you have to be glad to see them advance...unless you're a Cardinals fan!

Its a youth soccer game. Preteens. And kids are refereeing. But some parent had to open his big mouth and complain about the call, causing the young center ref to feel uncomfortable. She handled the situation absolutely perfectly. Unfortunately the other parents who seem to side with the jerk don't get it either. I wonder if the guy with the big mouth will be proud of this ten years from now when he realizes how insignificant this game was in the grand scheme of things. Not to be cynical, but probably not.
According to a recently published article in the Washington Post, youth sports participation is waning. While the causes are possibly many, most studies point to the growth of travel or competitive sports and to overbearing, win-at-all-costs parents and coaches. We cannot zap the fun out of sports for our youngsters, especially in the pre-teen years. And we all know and remember how much fun recreational leagues were and are. Let's make sure we maintain a healthy balance and not ruin sports for our kids.
