Just watched a heartbreaking U17 girls soccer game! Both teams played their hearts out, but the ending was a shame. For some reason, the refs didn't show up. Calls were made and finally a referee was summoned. But here was the problem: He arrived 40 minutes past the 7 PM scheduled start time and the field's lights were timed to go off exactly at 9 PM. Since the girls play 45 minute halves, that meant that the second half would be truncated. In a back-and-forth game the visiting team scored to take a 3-2 lead midway through the second half. Then, the lights went out. Nothing anyone could do. Game over, even though there were still 15 minutes left. Sad way for it to end, but it was terrific soccer.
